Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease begins with plaque buildup below the gum line. Left unaddressed, it progresses into periodontitis — deep bacterial infection that damages the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. The earliest stage, gingivitis, can be reversed. Once it advances, the goal shifts to management: protecting what remains and preventing further loss.

Without consistent treatment, the consequences compound. Gum recession deepens. Bone diminishes. Teeth loosen and shift. Research has also documented connections between untreated gum disease and systemic health — cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, and chronic inflammation among them.

The Perio Plus Membership is $650 per year. It includes the full scope of care most patients with active gum disease require — complimentary with membership.

Your Care, Provided by Dr. Liliana Pérez

Periodontal care at Pelican Dental Care is provided by Dr. Liliana Pérez, DMD, a general dentist licensed in Florida since 2010. Dr. Pérez completed a prosthodontic residency program in Colombia (1993–1998), where she received advanced training in restorative dentistry and occlusal principles. She is a licensed general dentist in Florida and is not recognized as a specialist in the United States.

With 35 years of practice, she brings a depth of clinical experience that is difficult to replicate — a calm, measured perspective shaped by having seen, and successfully managed, a great deal.
